I haven't made a real blog post for a while. And it's better that way. Buuuttttt......
I was recently solicited to be an editor for a publishing company. A previous client recommended me. I'm dipping my toe in and I'm being completely noncommittal. I've been given my first assignment and remember precisely why I shied away from the publishing industry.
So I can't give specifics--non-disclosure clause. But what I'm currently editing is like editing a really long article, "How to wash dishes." I take it back. I don't think I've ever seen an article about how to wash dishes.
It's more like a long article, "How to save money." I've seen a lot of those. This is a manuscript from a non-expert on a subject that she clearly thinks she knows a lot about, but mostly she's talking about what everyone else is doing wrong and how she's doing it right. And it's all opinion.
I've read a lot of articles on how to save money. I think I've got this subject pretty much nailed. I really don't see why we need another article about this. Especially by a non-expert.
So, to give you a bit of an idea of what I'm reading right now: "I have been paying bills for about two years. I also had some experience paying bills before. My experience is very specific to my situation, but clearly, I have a lot of insight, since I have paid bills so consistently for two years. You had better read all this information I give you, because I know what I'm talking about."
Clearly, flattery will convince me to accept any job . . . If you're writing a non-fiction piece, please be an actual expert. Or try not to be a haughty twerp.
